The Origins of the Ordre
......Dating back to the second half of the seventeenth century, the Order was then composed of young nobles from the court of Louis XIV, all famous gourmets and great wine connoisseurs. They particularly appreciated the wines from the three famous Champagne hillsides, Ay, Avenay and Hautvillers, which earned them the name "Les Trois Coteaux" and then "L'Ordre des Coteaux". It was at this time that the research on the essential methods of Champagne production came to fruition.
The Ordre des Coteaux disappeared during the French Revolution. In 1956, François Taittinger, at the time President of Champagne Taittinger, undertook historical research and uncovered references to the Ordre. He then revived it by giving it its current name: Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne. The Order now enjoys the prestige of the entire Champagne profession. of which membership now exceeds five thousand passionate members worldwide.
